“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” – Lao Tzu
Suddenly you open your eyes and realize that you achieved what you’ve been striving for. And then you get the feeling that you want to quite everything. A perfect example is when you apply to your dream job and for the first time in your life you pray hoping it’ll increase your odds. A few days later, you get the recruiter’s call and you’ve just been hired. Just like getting married for the first time, you probably get cold feet when dreaming about your new awesome job; so excited yet a little bit nervous.
Some people don’t realize it yet but in the core of their worries lies the fear of commitment, which doesn’t just apply to a relationship. Fear of commitment can include careers, fashion, friendships, schooling and of course, relationships. A lot of people with this dilemma sometimes don’t finish what they start in the terror that they will fail. Their internal dialogue would go something like this, “I have to write this paper that’s due tomorrow but I know I’m going to fail so I’m not going to even try” or they constantly think about writing the paper but never actually do it. It’s the ‘actions are louder than words’ that is too committing. From this pre-anxiety of failure, getting what you want seems close to impossible because you get it but never finish it.
But the reality is, you have to face your fears or you’ll never overcome it. You hold yourself back when you know you have so much to offer. To truly get what you’ve been striving for – you can’t give up. Without a doubt, the obstacles of life can get the better of you but you just can’t relinquish on anything, especially your dreams. Not giving up is the solution to most commitment issues.
Commit yourself to your dreams and I promise at the end, it’ll be worth every fear.
